International Girls in ICT Day (ITU)

It is widely acknowledged that science, technology, and innovation play pivotal roles in in our modern digital society. However, However, it is disconcerting that women constitute less than 30% of STEM professionals, highlighting the need for greater gender diversity in these fields.

Hence, in an effort to enhance the role of women in the field of information and communication technology, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has designated April 25 as the “World Day of Girls in Information and Communication Technology ” to advocate for greater representation of girls and women in the ICT sector.

Moreover, on this exceptional day, ITU and its associates are collaborating to encourage and empower girls to pursue educational or professional trajectories in science, engineering, information and communication technology, mathematics, and other disciplines. The primary objective is to redue the digital gender gap. Additionally, the agency aims to encourage collaboration between the government and the private sector to facilitate the development of essential skills among girls and young women, enabling them to pursue careers in information and communication technology.

Why is ICT important for girls?

The significance of ICT for girls lies in its role in supporting the education of women and girls, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5, which aims to promote gender equality and empower all women and girls through information and communication technologies.

What is the theme of girls in ICT 2024?

The theme “Digital Skills for Life” has been designated for girls in ICT 2024, emphasizing the importance of their ability to become proficient digital users and creators in order to advance in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
